Given the thoroughly convincing display against Borussia Mönchengladbach, it was hard to search for a point of criticism. “Clearly, conceding the last goal annoys us a bit,” said Leon Goretzka following the 4-1 win at home. “That aside, it was a very controlled performance for the most part.” Head coach Vincent Kompany could only agree: “The intensity was right and the boys who played today showed why we have so many points in the Bundesliga.” fcbayern.com has gathered the rest of the post-match reaction for you.
Max Eberl, board member for sport: “I think it was a deserved win – also in terms of the margin. It was a professional performance, even with a very young team on the pitch at the end. With the young players you see that the work is paying off. Maycon Cardozo has been training with us regularly for a while, is gaining confidence and got his chance tonight. When players from your own academy make the step up, it’s a great story for FC Bayern.”
Vincent Kompany: “I’m very pleased, regardless of the goal at the end. There were a lot of young players on the pitch then and it can happen that you briefly lose a bit of organisation in that period. But overall, it was a very good performance. The intensity was right and the boys who played today showed why we have so many points in the Bundesliga. Obviously we know what the players who didn’t play today can give us, but those who were on the pitch did their job very well. Without their performances across the season, we wouldn’t be where we are now.”
Jamal Musiala: “The foot’s a bit tired but it feels good. It was my third start now and the first 90 minutes after the injury – that does me good. These games will get me back into the rhythm, so I’m very happy. The captain’s armband was a great honour for me. When I then ran across the pitch, it certainly felt a bit heavy. I actually thought Leon [Goretzka] would get it because he’s been here longer. But to get to be captain for such a big club makes me very proud. Now it’s coming to the crunch time with a lot of important matches. When our energy level and focus are high, we can go into every match with the feeling that we can win it. That’s what we have to show now.”
Dayot Upamecano: “We played very, very well today and were very focused throughout. At the end of the day, I’m obviously pleased with the three points. The main thing was that we were very focused on our own game – we always want to win. We’re certainly in for a tough match in Bergamo on Tuesday, but we want to win again there and are ready for the challenge.”
Leon Goretzka: “I think we were very assured today. Clearly, conceding the last goal annoys us a bit, we switched off for a moment – we mustn’t actually let that happen. We’ll certainly speak about that again. That aside, it was a very controlled performance for the most part. It’s always fun here at the Allianz Arena.”
Jonas Urbig: “I wish Manu [Neuer] a speedy recovery. It’s just a shame and I’m sorry that he had to come off today. For me it was about preparing myself at half-time and then going out onto the pitch. I thought we exuded total dominance over the 90 minutes. We controlled the opposition and had good possession and movement towards goal. The set-piece situation and the goal we conceded… We have to work on that, it bothers us as a team. Nevertheless, we did a very good job as a team.”
Rouven Schröder (sporting director): “Everyone knows you can lose in Munich. Nevertheless, I think we gave a good account of ourselves as a team. We tried to defend well but also to play football. We felt throughout that we could get in behind until the final ball, but we were a bit unlucky in the crucial moments. On the whole, the match just proceeded in the worst possible way for us.”
Eugen Polanski (coach): “The second goal just before half-time obviously hurts in particular. You can’t lose the ball like that in Munich. We said before that everything really has to fit if you want to get something here against Bayern. Our performance in the first half was basically decent but we weren’t brave enough to attack the advanced areas. We had a few moments in transition, but we just lacked that bit of courage to really see it through and finish off. The spaces were there but we didn’t use them enough. In the second half, it obviously became extremely difficult with the red card. Nevertheless, the team fought and tried to put up some resistance.”
Nico Elvedi (defender): “The second goal we conceded annoys me the most. To go 2-0 down just before half-time is really frustrating. If we go into the break at 1-0, anything is possible here. As it was, we were hit on the counter – that just can’t happen. Our plan was to keep it tight first of all, not give much away, throw ourselves into the duels and to shut down the space, even taking on the challenges on the wings. Of course, there’s no shame in losing here in Munich but we’re still annoyed.”
