Calum McFarlane is supposed to be a “safe pair of hands” at Chelsea. Just get through to the end of the season without doing or saying anything crazy and he’s done well.

But honestly, some of the stuff he comes up with is so unintentionally funny. There’s dry humour, and then there’s… being so humourless that you don’t realise you’re being funny.

The exchange around whether he was excited to be managing Chelsea in an FA Cup final was a perfect example.

McFarlane gets into the weeds over his girlfriend’s family

McFarlane was asked if he was proud to be leading Chelsea out at Wembley, given his family are Chelsea fans. But he quickly corrected his interviewer – “my girlfriend’s family are Chelsea fans, not my family.”

He didn’t expand, putting the onus back on the questioner to follow up… “ok… so what would it mean to them, then?”

Another amusingly awkward moment from the coach, who went on to lighten up a bit and explain just how big a deal this was going to be for his girlfriend, her family and all Blues fans.

McFarlane was also asked about Cole Palmer’s form, and tied himself into hilarious knots trying to not say anything at all controversial.
