Enzo Maresca has revealed his plan for Josh Acheampong is “very clear” after the right back was linked with a move away from Chelsea.
Chelsea are currently preparing for their last sixteen tie against Benfica in the Club World Cup on Saturday evening, with a place in the quarter finals up for grabs.
Acheampong played the full 90 minutes in the 3-0 win against ES Tunis, but that’s been his only appearance in the competition so far.
Acehampong signed a new five year contract back in December after being frozen out by Chelsea until he committed his future to the club.
The 19-year-old was promoted to the first team squad along with fellow Cobham graduate Tyrique George and made four appearances in the Premier League and seven in the Conference League last season.
Acheampong has been linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund.
Acheampong impressed on his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace last season, and supporters were surprised he didn’t get more opportunities last season.
The teenager can play both right back and centre back, although it appears he’s currently third choice behind Reece James and Malo Gusto, whilst Chelsea are stacked at centre back.
Chelsea have stated Acheampong isn’t for sale after he was linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund earlier this week, and Maresca has now had his say on his future.
“My plan for him is very clear. I want him to stay with us,” he told his pre-match press conference.
Whilst the Blues have several options at right back the same can’t be said for left back, with Marc Cucurella currently the only option in the squad.
Maresca was able to rest Cucurella against ES Tunis with Gusto playing there, but that isn’t a long term solution and the Blues would have a big issue if the Spaniard got injured.
