Joshua Kimmich is out injured for the next international match. Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann reveals who will replace him as captain.

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann has made his decision: Jonathan Tah will take over the captain’s armband from Joshua Kimmich for the upcoming World Cup qualifier against Luxembourg. The Bayern defender will lead the team on Friday evening (8.45pm), as Nagelsmann confirmed at the press conference on Thursday.

„Jonathan Tah will replace him as captain because we once nominated a squad before the Nations League, but unfortunately there aren’t that many of them left at the moment. A few aren’t nominated, some are injured. And Jonah is the one left who plays,“ explained the national coach. According to Nagelsmann, Tah has earned the role: „He’s stabilised a lot, he’s playing a very good season at Bayern. After initially coming in, he’s doing very well with Upamecano. So he deserves to wear the armband tomorrow. I don’t even know if he knows it himself yet, but now he does.“

Tah is a key player – in the DFB team and at Bayern

For Tah, it is the next step in an impressive development at FC Bayern. Under Vincent Kompany, the defender has taken on a key role in defense and is considered one of the most consistent players of the season so far.

Kimmich, on the other hand, is out due to a painful capsule injury in his right ankle, which he sustained in training on Wednesday. It remains to be seen how long the 30-year-old will be out for, but Kimmich offered encouragement in an Instagram post: he is „giving everything to be back on the pitch on Monday“.

It remains to be seen whether there will be enough time before the final match of the World Cup qualifiers against Slovakia. This match in particular is particularly explosive after Germany surprisingly lost the first leg. Nagelsmann will therefore have to improvise again – and is relying on a Bayern star who has worked his way forward enormously in recent months.
