Nambatingue Toko, former Paris Saint-Germain forward, has died aged 73, Michel Denisot, the club’s former president, said in a post.
He made club history by scoring PSG’s first goal in European competition at Parc des Princes on 28 September 1982 against Lokomotiv Sofia in a 5-1 win, finishing with a brace.
Toko spent his entire playing career in France, starting at Albi in 1974 before moving to OGC Nice in 1975 for three seasons. With Nice he reached the 1978 Coupe de France final, where AS Nancy-Lorraine won 1-0.
After a brief nine-match spell at Bordeaux, he joined RC Strasbourg for one season, winning his only French league title in 1979.
He then had a season at Valenciennes, scoring 12 goals in 35 matches, before signing for PSG in 1980 at the age of 28.
Across five seasons in Paris he made 171 appearances and scored 43 goals. He scored in the Coupe de France final as PSG beat AS Saint-Étienne on penalties after extra time, 2-2, 6-5. He scored again in the 1983 final against Nantes, a 3-2 win.
After leaving PSG he spent one final season at RC Paris before retiring, then returned to the club’s staff until 1998. PSG paid tribute to him on social media.
