Napoli have provided more details on that Billy Gilmour injury that ruled him out of the Scotland squad for the 2026 World Cup.

The player sustained the injury during today’s 4-1 friendly win over Curacao, and it had initially not seemed particularly serious.

It was hoped that he had just left the field as a precaution before half-time, but he went for a scan at the local hospital and the verdict was devastating.

The Scotland national team released a statement confirming only that a knee injury meant he had to withdraw from the squad going to the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Napoli provided a few more details on their official website, confirming the diagnosis of a Grade II sprain to the right knee.

According to initial reports, this means Gilmour will need one to two months on the treatment table, so should hopefully be ready once the pre-season training begins.

It is a bitter blow for the player, who had already missed so much of this season after having surgery in November 2025 to resolve a groin injury.

That kept him out until February 2026, but he had started to regain match fitness just in time for the World Cup with Scotland until this latest setback.
