Napoli suffered their first defeat of the 2025/26 Serie A season as Milan defied a numerical disadvantage to claim a 2-1 win at San Siro. Antonio Conte’s side relinquished their 100% league start at San Siro on Sunday night.

Milan had Napoli on the ropes from the start. Alexis Saelemaekers broke the deadlock inside the opening three minutes, handing the Partenopei a mountain to climb. Despite creating several decent chances, the visitors headed into the break trailing the Rossoneri by two goals to nil.

Indeed, Christian Pulisic doubled the home side’s lead in the 31st minute. It looked like Milan would stroll to three points, only for Pervis Estupinan to throw Napoli a lifeline at the start of the second half.

In addition to picking up a straight red for a reckless tackle on Giovanni Di Lorenzo, the Colombian wingback conceded a penalty. Kevin De Bruyne made no mistake from the spot, blowing the game wide open. However, Napoli couldn’t find a way to break Milan’s defense for the rest of the match.

As a result, they allowed Milan to leapfrog them at the table’s summit. Without further ado, let’s look at our Napoli ratings.

Napoli (4-1-4-1)

Alex Meret – 3/10

With two of Milan’s three shots on target finishing behind him, the Italian goalkeeper had a night to forget. It would be no surprise if Vanja Milinkovic-Savic takes his place in midweek Champions League action.

Giovanni Di Lorenzo – 6/10

Despite drawing a penalty, the Napoli captain had a nightmarish evening against Pulisic, who repeatedly beat him down the flank.

Luca Marianucci – 4/10

It was a disastrous Napoli debut for the former Empoli man. Pulisic sailed past him to set up Saelemaekers for the opening goal. He was then late to close down the USMNT forward for the second.

Juan Jesus – 5/10

Though not as disappointing as his fellow defensive colleague, the Brazilian was not at the top of his game, arriving late to block Youssouf Fofana, who, fortunately for Napoli, skied the ball over the bar from a promising position.

Miguel Gutierrez – 7/10

Far more involved in the attacking movements than Di Lorenzo, the Spaniard was omnipresent in the final third, making several dangerous-looking crosses. However, accuracy let him down tonight.

Stanislav Lobotka – 5/10

He was supposed to be Napoli’s anchor in the middle of the park, but the Slovakian let his team down at San Siro.

Matteo Politano – 7/10

The diminutive winger had a field day against Estupinan but couldn’t put Mike Maignan to the test despite completing numerous progressive runs down the right flank.

Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa – 6/10

The Cameroonian had a quiet night by his standards, often refusing to take risks in possession, even when Napoli needed him to assume responsibility.

Kevin De Bruyne – 7/10

Had it not been for the penalty, the Manchester City icon would’ve probably ended up in the same category as Anguissa.

Scott McTominay – 6/10

Last season’s Serie A MVP saw his early effort saved by Maignan. However, he failed to pose any threat to Milan’s goal afterward.

Rasmus Hojlund – 4/10

Cut off from the rest of the team, the Danish striker endured a frustrating evening.

Substitutions

Elif Elmas – 6/10

Lorenzo Lucca – 4/10

Noa Lang – 5/10
