Napoli have reached out to agent Jorge Mendes to inquire about Matheus Nunes, who hasn’t fully panned since moving to Manchester City from Wolverhampton in 62M. The Partenopei are looking for a midfielder, especially because Frank Anguissa will miss some time due to AFCON, Nicolò Schira reports.

The Sky Blues paid €62M for the 27-year-old, but he hasn’t lived up to expectations. After some lackluster performances in his natural role, Pep Guardiola moved to the right-back position, where he found more continuity. He has logged 5 goals and 17 assists in 77 games since his transfer.  He had one of his best performances in the recent match versus Burnley.

It remains to be seen whether Manchester City will be open to parting ways with Matheus Nunes, who’s a meaningful part of their rotation and whose versatility comes in handy, and which formula Napoli will propose.

The Partenopei aimed to add a muscular midfielder in the past window, but Romelu Lukaku suffering a major thigh problem derailed their plan. They utilized most of their remaining resources to bring in Rasmus Hojlund. They did sign a new man at the position, bringing back Elijf Elmas on loan from RB Leipzig, but he has different characteristics.

It was understandable because more urgent needs took priority, but not finding a proper Anguissa deputy was the biggest black eye of their summer. They have to significantly change the make-up of their XI every time they want to give him some rest. The Portuguese international would be an outcast only if Manchester City signed somebody better in his roles, so he might not be a viable option altogether.
