Napoli have submitted a proposal to Jonathan David as the Italian side look to beat competition from the Premier League to the Lille forward.
David is out of contract in the summer and available on a free transfer. The Canada international has failed to agree a new contract at Lille and is expected to move on at the end of the campaign.
Several Premier League teams have been linked with signing David, who has scored 109 goals in 231 games since joining Lille from Gent in 2020. He has netted 25 times in all competitions this season, including nine in 14 games as Lille reached the Champions League’s knockout rounds.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Napoli are now in advanced talks to sign David, with the Serie A side having submitted an ‘important contract proposal’ to the player.
The Italian league leaders are keen to bolster their firepower ahead of a return to the Champions League next season.
Antonio Conte’s side have been linked with Liverpool’s Darwin Nunez and Manchester United’s Rasmus Hojlund, but David’s availability on a free transfer heightens his appeal.
Arsenal, West Ham, Manchester United, Chelsea and Spurs are among the Premier League sides understood to monitoring developments.
In March, David said move to La Liga would be his favoured destination.
Speaking to the It’s Called Soccer podcast, the 25-year-old said: “I think I can adapt to every league. Every league has its differences. The Premier League is a lot faster and more physical than all of the other leagues. But for me, I grew up watching a lot of La Liga and for me, that would be my preferred league. That is the league that I enjoyed watching the most so one day I would like to play there.”
