The Addicks had rejected Cardiff City’s attempts to poach Jones

Nathan Jones says he and Charlton Athletic have “a long way to go to achieve our goals,” after the Welshman signed a new five-year contract with the club until the summer of 2030.

The news comes less than a fortnight after Jones guided Charlton back to the Championship after a five-year stay in League One with victory over Leyton Orient in the play-off final at Wembley.

Earlier this week, it emerged that managerless Cardiff City had made a number of approaches to Charlton in an attempt to hire Jones as their own head coach.

But those approaches were rejected by Charlton, who have quickly sought to protect their asset by tying Jones down to a longer deal, despite the fact his previous contract still had three years left to run.

Jones joined Charlton in February 2024 and, after steering them away from relegation last term, guided the club to promotion following a fourth-place finish in League One this season.

“I'm very proud and delighted,” Jones said of his new contract. “I still had three years left but for the club to come to me and want to continue that journey meant a lot to me because it's a club that I love.

“We've just taken one big step, but that's only one big step, we still have a long way to go to achieve our goals and I'm glad that I'll continue to work towards that.”

Charlton chairman Gavin Carter said: “We have a really cohesive group forming at Charlton —from the players and coaching staff to the wider team behind the scenes and, of course, our supporters. Nathan has been a key part of that unity and our success on the pitch this season means we are ahead of schedule in our long-term planning for the club.

“Nathan understands the values of this club and shares our ambition for where we want to go. We’re thrilled to have him on board for the long-term.”

James Rodwell, the club’s managing director, added: “Nathan has done an incredible job since returning to the club last year. His leadership has been crucial in developing a culture and structure that has enabled us to progress.

“His vision, energy and commitment to the club are clear to see, and we’re delighted he’ll be leading us forward. This long-term commitment enables us to plan, creates stability and allows us to develop a strategy that can only benefit the football club.”

Speaking to Standard Sport after winning the League One play-off final, Jones said: “We have to build now. We have to improve on every single level, and then we’ll be competitive at the level we think we should be at.”

Jones was previously head coach of Luton Town, Stoke City and Southampton.
