FLW's Charlton Athletic Fan Pundit has urged the club to avoid signing Conor Coady on a permanent deal this summer.

Conor Coady has spent the last three months with Charlton Athletic, and he has played a crucial role in their push for survival in the Championship after making the switch to the capital after starting the campaign at Wrexham.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers centre-back only made six appearances for the Red Dragons before joining the Addicks, and he has already featured on eight occasions for Nathan Jones', scoring one goal in his side's 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough.

Nevertheless, given his experience in the top flight, there will be several supporters at The Valley who believe that the defender should be made a priority signing in the summer given just how vital he has been to their turnaround in form, as well as their new-found defensive stability.

Yet, there is one issue with signing Coady on a permanent deal from Wrexham, and Charlton fans must be wary if their side does launch a fresh transfer agreement with the Welsh outfit in the summer transfer window.

Charlton Athletic warned that Conor Coady's wages could be a problem if a permanent bid is sought

At 33, there are few players in the Championship with the Liverpool-born ace's experience, and he has been quite the coup for a side battling towards the bottom end of the table.

However, when asked if he wants the Addicks to sign Coady on a permanent deal in the summer, Football League World's Charlton Fan Pundit, Chris Woodward, said: "Despite his positive performances in a Charlton shirt, I'd be avoiding Coady this summer. He's added real leadership, experience and fight when we found ourselves in the relegation scrap, but I don't think he's the type of player we should be looking at if we want to progress as a club.

"He's 33-years-old now, so he hasn't got many more years in the tank. He's also on a reported £25,000-a-week at Wrexham, which in no capacity can we match or should be looking at matching to make him our highest paid player.

"Even from a personal point of view, the wages he's currently on at Wrexham, all his family living up north, and him starting to transition to a punditry position, which he looks like he has a great future in, I wouldn't even think a move to Charlton permanently would be on his list of priorities.

"With athleticism being a key trait that Jones likes in his systems, I don't think this was ever a long-term strategy and we just needed someone to come in to provide short-term relief, which Coady definitely has.

"Although I wouldn't be looking to tie him down permanently, I think it's been a brilliant move for both parties. When Coady does depart this summer, I think both he and Charlton would be very happy with how this move has worked out on both ends and we'll wish each other all the best moving forward."

Wrexham may be looking to offload Conor Coady cheaply this summer

Wrexham are one of several sides looking to make a push for the Championship play-offs in the final weeks of the season, and their form in recent weeks has put them into a really strong position as they chase down Southampton and Hull City.

However, promotion to the Premier League would leave players such as Coady out in the cold and, therefore, they may be looking to sell the veteran centre-back cheaply as Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney try to add even more quality to the squad at the Racecourse Ground.

With Charlton forming a connection to the 33-year-old during his time on loan, he may be willing to lower his wage demands, and sign on for another season at The Valley.

Nonetheless, considering the age of the defender, it may not be a wise decision to spend a significant portion of the club's wages on a player who is entering the twilight of his career.
