Plenty of eyebrows were raised when Newcastle United star Dan Burn was named in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
However, the Englishman silenced his critics with a solid performance as the Three Lions kicked off their campaign with a comfortable 2-0 win against Albania.
On a night when the spotlight was on Arsenal’s teenage history maker Myles Lewis-Skelly, Burn also had his share of the spotlight and etched his name into English folklore after breaking a 15-year record.
At age 32, the Newcastle ace became the oldest player to make his debut for England since 33-year-old Kevin Davies against Montenegro in October 2010.
The towering centre-back enjoyed a solid outing at the heart of the Three Lions defence alongside Aston Villa ace Ezri Konsa, who is a more familiar face in the English camp.
Burn was far from a bystander in the game, recording an astonishing 153 touches. He had an outrageous 99% pass accuracy despite sending 14 into the final third, including 3/3 long passes.
On the other side of the ball, Burn recorded seven clearances, won each of his two attempted tackles, and recovered the ball twice.
He also won four of his six aerial duels and came close to scoring on his debut.
His performance earned him high praise from the English media. The Daily Mail raved about his aerial dominance, calling him a “menace” when attacking corners.
The Evening Standard also praised the Newcastle ace for making some “crucial clearances” and admitted he’s a “welcome addition to England’s backline”.
Tuchel will likely shuffle the pack when the Three Lions take on Latvia on Monday night, but Burn has certainly given the former Chelsea head coach plenty to think about.
The towering defender has been a key player for Newcastle this season, featuring in 36 games across all competitions.
His only goal for the Magpies this season came at Wembley when he opened the scoring in Newcastle’s historic 2-1 win against Liverpool in the EFL Cup final.
