Marseille defender Nayef Aguerd will have groin surgery on Thursday after a difficult spell following an excellent start at the club.
The club said in a statement that he had been playing for weeks with pain and discomfort that had become too great, and that conservative treatment had failed, making an operation unavoidable. It added that they hope to see him fully fit for the final Ligue 1 rounds, which are crucial in the push for third, currently shared with Lyon.
He missed Saturday’s 1-0 win at Toulouse and his adductor issues had become an open secret in recent months.
For the 29-year-old Morocco international, a €23m signing from West Ham on 2 September, the timing is also about being ready for the World Cup from 11 June to 19 July, having already feared missing the AFCON.
With only Ligue 1 remaining on their calendar, Marseille still have options at centre-back. Leonardo Balerdi and Benjamin Pavard formed the pairing and offered reassurance after causing plenty of concern in 2026.
