Sunderland could have to share a major fee with NEC Nijmegen if Robin Roefs is sold this summer, with a sell-on mechanism potentially in play.

According to Voetbal 4 U, NEC are monitoring the goalkeeper’s situation after inserting a clause worth about 10 per cent of any profit on a future sale, which could be activated if Sunderland agree a deal this summer.

Roefs joined from NEC for an initial £9million before add-ons. After an impressive first Premier League season, the 23-year-old has been linked with a move around £60million.

On that valuation, Sunderland’s profit would be about £51million, leaving NEC due close to £5million from the clause.

The Dutch club are also expected to receive a solidarity payment of more than £2.5million if a transfer at that level goes through. Taken with the original fee, NEC could ultimately earn in excess of £16million from Roefs’ switch and any subsequent sale.

Several clubs are credited with interest ahead of the summer window. Sunderland remain in a strong contractual position following his arrival last year.
