On January 29th 1995, Ottavio Bianchi’s Inter Milan hosted Torino in Match Day 18 of the 1994/1995 Serie A season, where Dutchman Wim Jonk fired off a trademark rocket of a shot.

Rather unusual circumstances since Inter were also coming off a UEFA Cup (Europa League) win from the previous season.

However the club decided to start fresh and to rebuild. Doing this under the guidance of former Napoli and AS Roma manager Ottavio Bianchi.

The team strengthened the squad in the off-season bringing in Gianluca Pagliuca and Marco Delvecchio.

Pagliuca joining for what was considered a world record fee at the time for goal-keepers, €7 million.

Despite the investment on and off the pitch, the team struggled to find consistency in the first half of the season.

This as they struggled to stay inside top ten going into round Match Day 18 versus Torino at home in tenth place. The Nerazzurri struggles were mainly attack.

This as the team had managed to keep a series of clean sheets throughout the first half. However, they lacked offensive fire-power to score goals and take early leads.

Inter Milan Beat Torino Led By Wim Jonk Rocket

Starting for the Inter were Gianluca Pagliuca, Giuseppe Bergomi, Massimo Paganin, Nicola Berti, Gianluca Festa, Angelo Orlando, Davide Fontolan, Wim Jonk, Marco Delvecchio, Dennis Bergkamp and Ruben Sosa.

For the visitors Torino, Luca Pastine started in goal. Ahead of him were Jocelyne Angloma, Sean Luca Sogliano, Giulio Falcone, Luca Pellegrini, Roberto Maltagliati, Ruggiero Rizzitelli, Gianluca Pessotto, Andrea Silenzi, Abedi Pele and Paulo Cristallini.

For the majority of the first half, the flow of the game remained in balance with both sides getting ample possession and shooting opportunities.

However neither side managed to break the deadlock. The Nerazzurri were trying to be quick through the middle. Repeatedly trying to get the ball to Ruben Sosa and Dennis Bergkamp.

Meanwhile the visitors were more methodical in their build-up play in offense. Mainly, relying on overloading on the wings to provide width to provide a steady dose of crosses towards the centre of the penalty box.

Gianluca Pagliuca was tested often through-out the first half, parrying away shots from close and long-range both.

Utterly demoralizing for the visitors, as it seemed like one of those days when nothing goes into the net.

Second half began with both teams taking a cautious approach and stuck with the game plan.

Most of Torino’s chances came from set-pieces however the brilliance of Pagliuca kept the home side in the match.

In the 55th minute, Wim Jonk made a cutting run to the edge of the box. The Dutchman scored a long range shot to give Inter the lead.

The powerful shot went straight to the top right corner of the goal leaving no chance for Luca Pastine.

Paolo Orlando Seals The Win For Inter Milan Over Torino

With the lead in hand, Inter switched to counter-attacking tactics by staying compact in defense and trying to catch visitors off-guard.

Torino started getting more men inside the box along with overloading the wings to send crosses towards the center.

In the 79th minute mark, the visitors managed to swing the match back even.

This as one of the crosses to the center of the box met the powerful and well-placed header of Andrea Silenzi.

The striker placed the ball into the bottom left edge of the goal to draw the game even at 1-1.

As the game headed towards the end, it became a physical battle with both sides going for the win.

Inter committed more men forward in the final 10 minutes looking for the important winning goal.

In the process, Inter managed a number of corner-kick opportunities but failed to convert them. A minute before full-time whistle, Dennis Bergkamp was brought down inside the box by the goalkeeper.

Pierluigi Orlandini converted the following spot-kick, and Inter went home with the win.

A win which turned out to be the final win for Ernesto Pellegrini as club chairman and owner.

As Massimo Moratti bought the club on February 17th 1995. And the rest, as they say, is history.
