Reds could get major boost for Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie against Paris Saint-Germain

Alexander Isak has continued training with Liverpool as he looks to make his comeback from injury against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League.

The Reds’ British record transfer signing has been absent since suffering an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture during the 2-1 win at Tottenham in the Premier League on December 20, hurt during a challenge by Spurs defender Micky van de Ven as he scored Liverpool’s first goal.

Isak was helped off the pitch and eventually underwent surgery, expected to miss a number of months recovering as a result.

The Swedish striker has spent three-and-a-half months out in total, but resumed team training last Thursday to raise hope that he could play some part in the heavyweight FA Cup quarter-final tie away at Manchester City.

Liverpool boss Arne Slot suggested that he could be a substitute at the Etihad Stadium, but said it was “definitely too fast” to expect him to be starting.

As it was, Isak was not named in the matchday squad for a dreadful 4-0 defeat by City that heaped more pressure on the under-fire Slot, who explained: “I was hoping the same [that Isak would be among the substitutes on Saturday], but you always do these things in co-operation with medical staff, performance staff and the player himself.

“We came to the conclusion that it was better for him to have a few more sessions than only one or two and then immediately jump into a game like this, where if you bring him in there might be extra time.

“The situation is now that I hope – again I hope – that he will be available for Wednesday, but today came too early for him.”

Isak was seen training during Liverpool’s open session that took place in front of the media on Tuesday at their AXA Centre base in Kirkby, suggesting that he is likely on track to be involved against PSG.

The Reds travel to Paris later on Tuesday for Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final first-leg tie at the Parc des Princes, with Slot due to address the media at 6:30pm BST.

There appeared to be no surprise absences among the Liverpool squad seen training on Merseyside ahead of their flight, with long-term absentees Conor Bradley, Wataru Endo and Giovanni Leoni all still out.

Slot said last week that Alisson Becker was expected to be missing until “towards the end of the season” with a hamstring injury sustained in training last month, with Giorgi Mamardashvili deputising in goal.

The Brazilian later took to social media on Friday to confirm: “I didn't suffer a new injury. I'm in the treatment phase, and the plan is to be in full playing condition by the end of April.”
