The Owls are not expected to add any further free agents in the short-term
Sheffield Wednesday are not expected to add any further free agents to Henrik Pedersen's threadbare squad as availability and injury concerns start to mount at Hillsborough.
That is according to a fresh report from local publication, The Star, which outlines the stance the Owls have decided to take in the short-term when it comes to transfer plans as talk of a long-awaited takeover continues to rumble on in the background.
The predicament which has surrounded the first four months of Wednesday's Championship campaign has been well-documented, with the aforementioned Pedersen left with extremely little in the way of resources and depth when it comes to any funds or the number of players within his squad, as the club were forced to count the cost of the disastrous final weeks and months of Dejphon Chansiri's controversial ownership.
At present, the Steel City side are a League One side in all but name, as they were served with an initial 12-point deduction on October 24th after entering administration amid fears that an outstanding £1m tax bill owed to His Majesty's Revenue and Customs would not be paid ahead of the set deadline, before a further six-point deficit came their way on December 1st in relation to several instances of delayed wage payments and other non-payments throughout the year of 2025, whilst Chansiri, himself, was hit with a three-year ownership ban at any EFL club.
A 1-1 draw with Watford on Tuesday saw Pedersen's side move up to minus-nine points after 19 games played. And, whilst administrative group, Begbies Traynor, are hopeful of swiftly ending their search for their preferred new owner after an initial deadline of December 5th was pushed back, such developments could also severely impact any transfer moves which the Owls are able to make at the turn of the year.

Throughout a summer of mass departures, which included senior players such as Michael Smith and Josh Windass, the Owls were significantly hamstrung as a result of numerous transfer or registration restrictions and embargoes placed on them by the EFL.
As such, the only additions made ahead of the most recent transfer deadline of September 1st were those of Ethan Horvath and Harry Amass, whose services were acquired on a temporary basis from Cardiff City and Manchester United respectively, with the latter's switch being fully compensated for by the Premier League giants.
Joe Lumley was, indeed, recruited on a two-game emergency loan in October as Horvath served a suspension, whilst Begbies Traynor continued to liaise with the governing body over the possibility of adding free agents to Pedersen's threadbare squad in exceptional circumstances.
As such, it was confirmed that the cash-strapped Owls were able to recruit a maximum of two further bodies, which ended up coming in the form of former Championship-winning defender and Leeds United captain, Liam Cooper and experienced winger, Nathan Redmond, who had previously been on trial with Steel City rivals, Sheffield United.
It has now been revealed by the Star that Wednesday are not expected to take such a course of action again heading into the January transfer window, despite the fact that injuries and a lack of availability are continuing to impact Pedersen's team selection.
The club is said to have not put any cases forward to the EFL since signing Redmond on November 27, despite being in constant communication with the governing body's Club Financial Reporting Unit (CRFU) for some time.
The report also states that Wednesday are not expecting such restrictions to be eased, although it has been claimed that they have been advised against putting further cases forward due to the current quality and fitness levels showcased by players who remain unattached to any club at present.

The aforementioned Redmond is, of course, no stranger to the Championship having featured at the level as recently as last season, although injury would significantly impact his minutes in Burnley's promotion-winning campaign under Scott Parker.
Not many were against the signing of the 31-year-old given his experience and the Owls' current situation. However, it is unclear as to how many minutes the one-cap England international will receive as his contract expires next month, and he is currently sidelined with a groin issue.
As such, this predicament could have influenced Wednesday's decision not to acquire any further free agents at this moment in time, given the frustration Redmond's situation would have given Pedersen, although the aforementioned limitations would have made it extremely difficult to source another player of his quality and knowhow for limited funds when fully fit and firing.
