There are football figures who leave a mark on a club, and there are those who become woven into its identity. Kevin Keegan belongs firmly in the latter category at Newcastle United.
The former Newcastle manager and player has revealed he is living with stage four cancer, prompting an emotional response from supporters who continue to regard him as one of the most influential figures in the club’s history.
Keegan, now 75, shared details of his cancer diagnosis during a live appearance at Newcastle’s Tyne Theatre and Opera House. The event became one of his first public engagements since his family disclosed earlier this year that he had been receiving treatment.
According to the original source, BBC Sport, the diagnosis came following scans carried out after Keegan was involved in a car accident that required surgery.
“I was in a car accident and, through that, I had to have an operation,” Keegan explained.
“Whilst having the scan for the operation, they found out I had cancer. They said they had an absolute top doctor for fighting what you have got, which is stage four cancer.”
It was a moment that brought a packed audience to silence before Keegan’s familiar wit quickly returned.

For Newcastle supporters, Keegan is far more than a former manager. He is the man who restored belief to a football club and a city.
When he arrived as manager in 1992, Newcastle were battling relegation from the old Second Division. Within a few years, they had become one of the most exciting teams in English football.
The Entertainers captured imaginations across the country with their fearless attacking style, while St James’ Park became one of football’s great stages.
Although a Premier League title ultimately eluded them, Keegan’s Newcastle side left a legacy that still resonates with supporters today.
That connection was evident as Keegan received a standing ovation during his return to the city.
Even after years away from the club, the affection remains undiminished. Generations of supporters who watched him transform Newcastle continue to view him as one of the defining figures of the modern era.
His influence stretches so far that current Newcastle manager Eddie Howe previously revealed he sought Keegan’s advice after taking charge of the club in 2021.
Despite discussing a serious cancer diagnosis, Keegan showed the humour that made him such a popular figure throughout his career.
Explaining his first meeting with the specialist overseeing his treatment, he joked about the doctor’s football allegiance.
“So I went to meet him. He’s a Liverpool supporter so I knew I wouldn’t walk alone.”
The doctor then outlined the treatment available to him.
“He said, ‘Kevin, this new treatment, I’ve got a tremendous strike rate’. I said, ‘What’s your strike rate?’ He said, ‘33%’. I thought it would be 80%, 90%. 33%!
“I’m still here at the moment.”
The comments drew laughter from the audience and underlined the resilience that has characterised Keegan throughout his football journey.
While Liverpool remains a hugely important chapter in his career, particularly given the success he enjoyed at Anfield, it was Newcastle that became his spiritual football home.
One of the most poignant moments of the evening came when Keegan discussed the possibility of returning to St James’ Park.
The Newcastle icon has not attended a match at the stadium since his departure in 2009, but admitted he would like the opportunity to return.
Conscious of not wanting to intrude, Keegan nevertheless revealed a desire to say goodbye properly to supporters who have backed him throughout the decades.
He also addressed suggestions that he should be honoured with a statue outside the ground.
“You will have to wait until I die, I’m afraid,” he said.
“I’m not against the statues that are outside at all, but it’s not something that really means that much to me.
“My statue is the way you receive me.”
Those words perhaps explain why Keegan remains such a beloved figure on Tyneside. For him, football has always been about people rather than monuments.
Following the announcement of his cancer diagnosis, Newcastle United issued a heartfelt statement of support.
“Kevin holds a unique and cherished place in the history of Newcastle United, and in the hearts of our supporters,” the club said.
“His passion, leadership and connection to the club and city have shaped some of our most memorable moments.”
As Kevin Keegan continues his fight against cancer, the football world is united behind him. Yet nowhere will the support feel stronger than on Tyneside, where one of Newcastle United’s greatest ever figures remains forever part of the club’s story.
