Eddie Howe admits the decision as to whether or not Alexander Isak stays at Newcastle this summer is ultimately out of his hands.
Isak did not travel to Singapore for Newcastle’s pre-season tour after a reporting a thigh injury.
The 24-year-old has told Newcastle he would like to explore a move away from the club and is attracting serious interest from both Liverpool and Saudi clubs, with a bid between £120m and £150m expected to test Newcastle’s resolve.
But Howe is clear that he wants to keep the Sweden international at the club, though says the decision will be made by the club and not him.
“There is a whole football club that has to make the decision,” he said. “The ownership, the board of directors will, especially with the money involved with modern day transfers. The manager of course has an opinion but the decision ultimately will rest with the board.
“Of course there’s things going on behind the scenes. He is in the news every day and I’m sure that is not easy for anyone in that situation. Conversations that happen with Alex and the club or Alex and myself will stay private.
“We do share a good relationship. He has been magnificent for us. We would love him to continue his journey at Newcastle.
“I certainly hope he stays and I said I was confident he would stay. But it’s football and who knows what the future may bring. I’ve sold players before, I’ve welcomed them back. Every situation is different.
“Whatever happens, it has to be right for Newcastle. We are in a strong position financially and we are ambitious. Our job is to keep improving the squad.”
Newcastle face Arsenal in Singapore on Sunday in the first friendly of their pre-season tour.
