Newcastle United are exploring the possibility of signing Bryan Mbeumo this summer, but Brentford’s valuation may prove to be a stumbling block.
The Magpies are long-time admirers of the Cameroon international and have scouted him extensively, but a fee in excess of £60 million could force them to reconsider.
Mbeumo has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most effective attackers this season, bagging 18 goals and six assists in 33 appearances.
His contribution has been vital to Brentford’s campaign. Alongside Yoane Wissa, who has scored 16 goals, he has helped deliver more than 60 percent of the club’s total in the top flight.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has admitted that Mbeumo could be sold if the club receive a suitable offer.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Frank described the 25-year-old as ‘very happy’ at the club but conceded that Brentford remain open to sales at the right price.
He reiterated the club’s model as a selling one, while insisting that only a handful of clubs globally are in a position to turn down significant transfer bids.
Although Mbeumo is under contract until 2026, with an option for an additional year, Brentford are reportedly willing to listen to offers this summer.
Frank confirmed that the forward would not push to leave but acknowledged that no player is guaranteed to stay.
Brentford are well-versed in replacing top talent, as evidenced by the departures of Neal Maupay, Ollie Watkins and Ivan Toney in previous seasons.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe views Mbeumo as a perfect fit for his system due to his positional flexibility and attacking output.
The player has featured prominently in Newcastle’s internal transfer discussions and is rated as an ideal reinforcement ahead of a campaign that could involve European football.
However, the club are still waiting to see which competition they will qualify for, with their league finish set to determine the scope of their summer business.
In addition to a wide forward, Newcastle are prioritising a new goalkeeper, a central defender and a striker to challenge Alexander Isak.
The club are tracking Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap, but financial constraints mean that major investment in Mbeumo would likely require outgoings elsewhere.
Newcastle’s recruitment team remain interested, but a move will depend on how far they are willing to stretch their summer budget.
