Newcastle United could be without Anthony Gordon when they take on Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium on Sunday.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe has confirmed that the England international is nursing a hip problem.
Gordon, who joined Newcastle in a £45 million deal from Everton, was forced off in the first half of Wednesday’s 2-0 Champions League win over Athletic Club.
Speaking after the midweek victory, Howe said the issue appears to be a recurrence of the hip injury that has plagued him in recent weeks, but he wanted to wait for further information.
However, speaking ahead of Sunday’s trip to London, Howe was cautiously optimistic but realistic about Gordon’s chances of playing a part in the match against Brentford.
“We don’t think it’s a serious injury,” Howe said in his pre-match press conference on Friday.
“We’re going to get him scanned, and we’re awaiting the results. There’s every chance he might miss out on Sunday, but we’ll give him every opportunity to be fit.”
Despite his fitness issues, Gordon has been named in the England squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Serbia and Albania.
The England international has been a bright spark for Newcastle this season.
He has scored four goals and provided an assist in 13 appearances across all competitions, although he has yet to open his goalscoring account in the Premier League.
Gordon is not the only player set to miss the game. Newcastle striker William Osula has also been ruled out with an ankle injury.
The 22-year-old was initially named in the squad to face Athletic before being left out after suffering discomfort in his ankle.
That issue is now expected to keep him sidelined, although Howe confirmed that the Danish striker will be out ‘for weeks, not any longer’.
