Newcastle United are considering bringing midfielder Elliot Anderson back to the club, according to iNews.
They reluctantly sold Anderson to Nottingham Forest to balance the books with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.
However, Newcastle are in a better position and want to re-sign Anderson, who has been terrific for the Tricky Trees.
Anderson has become an England international, establishing himself with some sensational performances.
The 22-year-old’s ability to control proceedings in the engine room is superb, combining solid progressive passing and carrying to devastating effect.
The ‘phenomenal‘ Anderson has been unplayable despite Forest’s massive issues in the dugout.
It is also worth noting that he is a boyhood Newcastle fan and reportedly enjoyed working with manager Eddie Howe.
Newcastle currently have Sandro Tonali starting at the base of midfield with Lewis Miley deputising, but Howe will want another quality option.
Even if Newcastle do manage to bring Anderson back, it wouldn’t solve their biggest midfield issue at the moment.
The Magpies still lack a proper holding midfielder, a natural number six capable of shielding the back line, winning duels, and breaking up opposition attacks before they develop.
Tonali is more of a deep-lying playmaker, while Miley’s youth and inexperience make him a risky option in high-intensity Premier League battles.
For Newcastle and new sporting director Ross Wilson, securing a specialist defensive midfielder is a top priority in the next transfer window.
