Manchester United had reached an agreement in principle to sign Ederson in June before he received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad.
United initiated a second round of medical checks after the ‘absolutely outstanding’ 27-year-old completed his international duties. In a shocking twist, the club then abruptly withdrew from the deal, informing Atalanta of their decision.
Newcastle United are now looking to capitalise on the situation. The Magpies are seeking elite options to rebuild their midfield following the £100 million sale of Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur, with Bruno Guimaraes also facing an uncertain future as Arsenal circle.
Crucially, Newcastle’s recruitment team do not share Manchester United’s reservations about signing Ederson.
While reports from Manchester suggested a minor knee concern prompted the Red Devils’ withdrawal, Atalanta’s board insist the player is fully fit and are prepared to offer him a new deal as he enters the final 12 months of his current contract in Bergamo.
Atalanta head coach Maurizio Sarri is happy to reintegrate Ederson if a transfer does not materialise, but the club’s hierarchy remain open to doing business at their original valuation, meaning Newcastle will likely need to match United’s previous offer.
Newcastle have already signed Sean Steur from Ajax, though the Dutchman is seen as a developmental prospect.
As a result, the Magpies could still add two more midfielders, with Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi expected to be one of them.
