A Newcastle United official injury update on Joelinton has been delivered, following Wednesday night’s brilliant win over Arsenal.
A 2-0 victory at St James’ Park made it a very convincing 4-0 aggregate win against the Gunners, as United head back to Wembley.
One player who missed the game though was Joelinton.
Forced off with a knee injury on Saturday against Fulham, the Brazilian ended up watching the Arsenal match from the sidelines.
On Tuesday morning ahead of the Arsenal match, Eddie Howe said this about Joelinton’s chances of making last night’s match:
“Joey had a knee brace on as a precaution. I would say he is a doubt but we will give him every chance to be fit. Our centre midfield, we have good strength in depth – Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock – they all bring something different.”
I think fair to say that was a bit of Eddie Howe kidology, guessing we all suspected that in reality Joelinton had zero chance of playing against Arsenal.
Following the St James’ Park win over Arsenal, Eddie Howe confirmed this, giving this official Newcastle United injury update on Joelinton:
“We knew that we were missing Joe[linton] for a period of time.
“We had to change something.
“So we came up with a plan on Monday [of playing three central defenders].
“Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
“We stuck to the plan and delivered [against Arsenal].
I think Joelinton will be out for weeks not months.
“It is not a serious injury but it is enough to make him miss the next few league games.”
What ‘the next few league games’ actually turns out to be, is open to much interpretation.
I think fair to say that Eddie Howe will be desperate to have Joelinton available for the cup final which is 38 days time (16 March).
After Birmingham in the FA Cup on Saturday, Newcastle then have three PL matches against Man City, Forest and Liverpool, with that game at Anfield in only 20 days time.
If winning at Birmingham, Newcastle would then have another FA Cup match on the weekend of Saturday 1 March. With then a nine day gap to West Ham away on Monday 10 March, before the Cup final six days later.
I think the smart money surely has to be on Eddie Howe planning to try and make sure Joelinton can be brought back fully ready for the West Ham match and especially then Wembley six days after that.
