Newcastle United have announced when the League Cup trophy will be first presented to fans.

The club’s official announcement (see below) on Wednesday, revealing that it will be this Sunday at St James’ Park.

This will be on the day the Newcastle United Women’s team take on the Mackems.

If you were a ‘little’ cynical, you may wonder if the motivation for this, or at least part of it, is to boost the crowd still further for this Women’s team derby match.

It is already guaranteed to be a record attendance for the second tier of women’s football, with over 28,000 tickets sold. However, who knows what could be possible now that fans know that this will be their first chance of seeing the League Cup trophy paraded on Tyneside.

Personally, I think it is a shame that it hasn’t been saved for the victory parade on Saturday 29 March, especially when I take it none of the Newcastle United men’s team/squad will be there on Sunday at St James’ Park.

Newcastle United official announcement – 19 March 2025:

‘Newcastle United legend Bob Moncur and CEO Darren Eales will present the Carabao Cup to a record crowd at St. James’ Park this weekend when Newcastle United Women take on Sunderland Women.

Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby will break the league’s attendance record, currently held by the Wearsiders. The first meeting between the sides at the Stadium of Light in October – which ended in a 2-1 win for the Magpies – drew 15,387 spectators, including a large travelling contingent from Tyneside.

And it will also smash the club’s own record for a women’s match, which stands at 28,565. That was set in November 2022, when the Magpies beat Barnsley in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup; it was also the biggest attendance outside of a final the competition had seen.

And to celebrate the remarkable crowd, supporters will be treated to the sight of the trophy being paraded by Moncur – previously the last captain to lift a trophy for Newcastle United, the Fairs Cup in 1969 – and CEO Darren Eales.

Becky Langley’s United side, who are in the hunt for a third successive promotion as they bid to reach to reach the Barclays Women’s Super League, have attracted huge crowds to their fixtures at St. James’ Park in recent seasons during their rise from the fourth tier.
