Newcastle United owners now look forward on transfer front as move into new PSR cycle | OneFootball

A difficult time for the Newcastle United owners and their senior staff.

Found themselves in a position just over two weeks ago, of having to make some difficult, but essential, decisions.

The Newcastle United owners sanctioned the sales of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, to ensure the club stayed on the right side of PSR as we got to 30 June 2024. The final day of the 2023/24 season’s accounting period for Newcastle United, as well as the last day of the latest three-year PSR cycle, with the club having to not have more than £105m of losses (not including the spending allowed on certain things that don’t contribute to PSR).

The Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales says these were very difficult times but that these essential short-term decisions (of selling Minteh and Anderson) had to be made, to ensure Newcastle United kept their very best first-team players AND stayed on the right side of PSR.

However, with a new PSR cycle having kicked off, everybody at the club, from Eddie Howe to the Newcastle United owners, is now able to look forward once again.

Newcastle United CEO Darren Eales talking about PSR, making difficult decisions, as well as now a more promising outlook ahead on the transfer front:

“We are into a new PSR cycle and we are having those discussions.

“Paul Mitchell has come onboard and it is for him and Eddie Howe to discuss what sort of targets they want, the areas they want to strengthen.

“It is then important to have those meetings to decide where we are going to allocate those resources to strengthen our squad.

“That is what we are looking to do but these situations are very fluid.

“On all of these things, we are compliant [with PSR].

“We did what we needed to do [on deadline day].

“Going forward, we are into a new cycle [of PSR] and we do not want to be leaving ourselves in that situation again in such tight circumstances.

“With all of these things, that deadline is needed for the whole market to focus minds and get those deals done. but coming out of it, from my perspective, PSR needs to be looked at, because incentivising the selling of homegrown players is not a good protocol to have.

“We did not want to lose those players, but again, we had to do the deals we had to do to leave the squad in the best place possible for Eddie moving forward.

“In that respect, with Bruno, Isak, Gordon, Joelinton and Tonali to come back, we have got Lloyd Kelly coming in as an addition already, Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento, we have got the squad to kick on, but we are always looking to add to that and that is the challenge now.

“That is what we need to do, we need to find ways to improve, that is what we are doing with Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell.

“We are really excited about the season ahead.

“There is the disappointment of not making Europe, but the fact is, we have the advantage of going Saturday to Saturday and not having the distractions of European football.

“We saw that the season before, when we had that amazing year and qualified for the Champions League.
