Sandro Tonali swap deal for Douglas Luiz?
The Italian media are at it yet again, again!
Over in Italy, Gazzetta Dello Sport claiming a deal could happen between Newcastle United and Juventus.
When you see what they are ‘relying’ on for this transfer claim, you have to laugh, again!
Gazzetta Dello Sport report – 2 April 2025:
‘Juvenus are also confident in their good relations with Newcastle.
The Lloyd Kelly signing, a winter reinforcement worth around twenty million that has cost [Juvenus Sporting Director) Cristiano Giuntoli a fair amount of criticism, is the key…in addition to [Giuntoli] having immediately addressed the defensive emergency, has opened a channel with Newcastle thanks to the English centre-back.
A bridge that he will try to exploit for Tonali…a significant investment will be necessary to sit at the table with the rich British club. At least 60-70 million.
A mountain of money that Juventus hopes to mitigate by expanding the operation. The idea is to include a player in the deal and the main suspect remains Douglas Luiz.
A question of role (the same), valuation (35-40 million) and status.’
These transfer fee amounts that today’s Gazzetta Dello Sport report is talking about, are all in Euros.
So they think it is realistic that Juventus might possibly get Sandro Tonali for as little as €60m (approx £51m) and that Newcastle United would be prepared potentially to pay €40m [£33m] for Douglas Luiz.
Effectively, if this (VERY imaginary!) deal happened in the summer, Juventus would get Sandro Tonali for approximately £18m plus Douglas Luiz.
Douglas Luiz moved from Aston Villa in summer 2024 for around €51m (approx £43m at today’s exchange rate).
Newcastle United the previous summer (2023) paid AC Milan €58.9m (approx £50m at today’s exchange rate) for Sandro Tonali.
Honestly, whilst you always have to be sceptical about any transfer exclusive/tale they can at least try and make it sound feasible, that there is some logic to it!
The truth is though, that pretty much none of the stories/lies that pass for transfer exclusives regarding any Newcastle United player at the minute, have even a scrap of logic in them, never mind truth!!
You get it with Alexander Isak especially, he cost Newcastle United £63m in 2022 and yet after having gone from a promising forward, to be arguably the best striker in the world three years later, some of the ‘exclusives’ will now claim transfer valuations of £70m or £80m, a few even have Newcastle United supposedly willing to sell for what they paid for him! You especially get this in media overseas writing for their own national football audience, with French, Spanish and Italian media desperate for people to believe that Alexander Isak could sign, for PSG, Barca, Juventus, or whoever.
This latest garbage about Sandro Tonali that all the Italian media are feasting on and claiming to be possible, is just basically a recycling of what they were all claiming in January.
Back in January 2025 for example, Italian media outlet Calciomercato claimed that Newcastle United would be prepared to do a straight swap with Juventus, Sandro Tonali for Douglas Luiz.
Calciomercato stated about Sandro Tonali in January 2025;
‘Formerly of Milan, a key figure in Luciano Spalletti’s Italy and a player considered important, but not essential , by Newcastle coach Eddie Howe, Tonali could open up to the hypothesis of a return to one of the big teams in our league.’
Talk about making it up as you along, apparently Eddie Howe didn’t see Sandro Tonali as ‘essential’ these days.
You have to laugh, any straw poll of Newcastle United fans now, would put Sandro Tonali behind only Alexander Isak in terms of importance, which I think for sure is how Eddie Howe sees it as well.
Calciomercato continued to make it up as they go along…
‘With similar ages and contract expirations (Douglas Luiz born in 1998, expiring in 2029; Tonali born in 2000, expiring in 2028), the two midfielders could become the protagonists of a logical and satisfying operation for both Newcastle and Juventus : the English would have a player who in the Premier League, and in a club of their same level, has given his best; Juventus, on the other hand, would welcome a perfect reinforcement for Motta’s midfield.’
The Italian media get ever more desperate when it comes to claiming Serie A will get back one of their very brightest young homegrown talents, still never recovering from the shock of when Sandro Tonali left AC Milan for St James’ Park.
Before that January transfer window opened, the Italian media were making loads of shameless lies (see below), claiming that Juventus were going to be able to buy Sandro Tonali for less than he cost NUFC with Newcastle United willing sellers. They even claimed Newcastle United would let the midfielder go back to a Serie A club on loan. Whilst despite the player saying the opposite many times in interviews, the Italian media claiming Sandro Tonali was desperate to leave Newcastle United.
What makes this even more laughable, is that Juventus are really struggling this season, out of all cup competitions and will consider themselves lucky to get any European football, never mind Champions League, yet their big summer 2024 signing Douglas Luiz has only started three league matches so far, instead a regular feature on the bench.
Yet the Italian media were claiming Newcastle United would do a straight swap, one of their best two players (Sandro Tonali) for somebody (Douglas Luiz) who has been a massive flop in Italy and whose value has surely massively dropped due to his poor levels of performance.
The Mag report – 18 December 2024:
Only last week, we saw Gazzetta dello Sport claim that Sandro Tonali was desperate to return to AC Milan, or indeed any Serie A club.
The journalist in question who wrote/made up the piece, even saying that Newcastle United could loan Sandro Tonali to an Italian club in January.
Quite how anybody believes this sort of contrived nonsense with absolutely no substance behind it, baffles me. Just because this feeble claim is then blindly repeated by unscrupulous other media in Italy and the UK, doesn’t make it any more believable.
Giuseppe Riso, who is the agent of Sandro Tonali, made clear how pathetic the Italian journalist was, stating ‘Sandro is absolutely not considering to return in Serie A. He is happy at Newcastle United.’
Then Eddie Howe followed up, also saying how embarrassing and laughable the Italian media were, stating ‘It is not in our plans to do without Sandro. These are rumours that make me laugh. Sandro is a vital part of what we are doing. We have made a long-term investment in him and personally, I am really happy with him, we have built a solid relationship.’
The whole pathetic article just aimed at trying to stir things up, with the Italian media still grieving for the fact that one of the very best young Italian homegrown stars, had chosen Newcastle United over AC Milan and Serie A. The lame claims based sole on how much/little Sandro Tonali had played since almost a year out of competitive football.
Sandro Tonali particularly excellent in his last two starts for Newcastle United, the 3-3 draw against Liverpool and hammering Leicester 4-0, now another home match tonight against Brentford in the cup quarter-final. Newcastle United fans keen to see further progression in this very promising Bruno and Tonali partnership in midfield.
Just ahead of this massive cup match, no surprise to see the lame Italian media at it again with Sandro Tonali.
This time it is Corriere dello Sport who are embarrassing themselves.
They claim that they have information as to the transfer fee Newcastle United are wanting for Sandro Tonali, which they say is €55m (£45.4m at today’s exchange rate) and that Juventus are prepared to match that figure and buy the midfielder in the January transfer window.
For those of you who think, ‘well, with all these reports in the Italian media, surely there must be some truth in Sandro Tonali maybe leaving Newcastle United.’ Can I just say this, the Italian media are just the same as ours in the UK, they are desperate to sell newspapers to a backdrop of swiftly declining sales and to get clicks online, exactly the same as the scenario in this country. They put out countless transfer stories that have no substance, just like here.
If you want any further evidence, just consider this.
The AC Milan accounts showed (see below) that in July 2023, Newcastle United paid €58.9m (£48.6m at today’s exchange rate, though it equated to well over £50m wen NUFC bought the midfielder last year) for Sandro Tonali, plus an unspecified amount of potential future add-ons.
So this latest ridiculous Italian media report, claims that Newcastle United would now happily accept €55m, less than the €58.9m they paid for him, when Sandro Tonali was unproven in the Premier League.
We are expected to believe that after going through almost a year where Tonali was banned from playing and NUFC still paying his wages, that Newcastle United would now be prepared to sell the Italy international at a loss, just when we are now starting to see him get a proper chance of a run in the starting eleven and showing such promise!
Honestly, if anybody believes any of this pathetic nonsense from the Italian media, you need to give your head a shake. Even if Newcastle United were prepared to sell Sandro Tonali, they could demand a far higher transfer fee than is claimed in Italy.
I think it is also so disrespectful from the Italian media towards Sandro Tonali, when the player himself has repeatedly said he is determined to repay the support and loyalty shown by Newcastle United and the fans, for the support they gave the midfielder during his suspension.
The Mag report – 29 October 2024:
‘On 3 July 2023, Newcastle United announced that they’d signed Sandro Tonali.
In the announcement, NUFC revealed that the Italy international had signed an initial five year contract, taking him to the end of June 2028.
However, as per normal, the club said it was an ‘undisclosed fee’ they had paid for Sandro Tonali.
A lot of guesswork at the time as to what Newcastle United had actually paid, but now, AC Milan have confirmed the exact figures.
Extracts from the official club accounts making the information public.
However, Brescia had a sell-on clause from their original sale of Sandro Tonali (to AC Milan), which meant they received €4.3m of what Newcastle paid, meaning AC Milan received around €54.6m.’
