Newcastle United host reigning champions Liverpool in a pulsating Premier League clash at St James’ Park on Monday night.

However, the fixture is overshadowed by the transfer saga surrounding Newcastle’s star striker, Alexander Isak. With the Swede reportedly “frozen out” amid a £110m bid from Liverpool, he will not feature against the club he is trying to join.

The clash is a repeat of last season’s Carabao Cup final. Newcastle won that clash to end their silverware drought, but have a poor Premier League record against Liverpool. The hosts will be looking to end a long winless run against the Reds, whom they have not beaten in the league since 2015.

Newcastle United vs Liverpool – Match preview and team news

  • Date: Monday, 25th August 2025
  • Kick-off: 8pm BST
  • Venue: St James’ Park, Newcastle upon Tyne
  • Last Meeting: Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle United, March 16, 2025, League Cup

Team News

Newcastle United

Eddie Howe has confirmed that star striker Alexander Isak will not feature against Liverpool amid the ongoing transfer standoff. In more positive news, midfielder Joe Willock has made a surprise early return from an ankle injury and is fit. New signing Jacob Ramsey is also poised for his debut, though likely from the bench.

Liverpool

Arne Slot will be without right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury until after the international break. Conor Bradley is fit again and provides a natural option to replace him. The squad is significantly boosted by the return of Ryan Gravenberch, who is available after suspension and is expected to come straight back into midfield.

Form

Newcastle United

Newcastle began their season with a resilient defensive display, grinding out a 0-0 draw away at Aston Villa. However, the performance highlighted a lack of attacking spark, a concern that will only be amplified by the absence of star striker Alexander Isak.

Liverpool

Liverpool began their title defence with a 4-2 victory over Bournemouth, but the performance was far from convincing.

Arne Slot’s new-look side looked disjointed at times, and their defensive vulnerability will give Newcastle hope. However, their attack remains as potent as ever, and they arrive at St James’ Park on the verge of breaking club records. A single goal on Monday would see them set a new milestone for scoring in consecutive away league games (22) and equal their all-time top-flight scoring streak.

Predicted Lineups

Newcastle United predicted XI: Pope; Trippier, Schär, Burn, Livramento; Guimarães, Joelinton; Tonali, Gordon, Barnes, Elanga.

Liverpool predicted XI: Alisson; Bradley, Konaté, van Dijk, Kerkez; Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Gravenberch, Wirtz; Salah, Ekitike.
