An impressive volley into the bottom corner from Jasmine McQuade with five minutes left to play was enough to cancel out Charlie Devlin’s first-half strike from range.

Charlie Devlin opened the scoring for Sheffield United on the stroke of half-time when her long-range effort found the roof of the net to silence the crowd.

The Blades started well from kick-off and looked to be on the front foot with Charlie Devlin attempting a lob from 35 yards, which Claudia Moan did well to get back and palm off her line.

Beth Lumsden looked to instil a creative spark into Newcastle’s attack when she twisted Sophie O’Rourke inside before flashing an effort wide of the far post from a tight angle.

After a rocky start, United were pushing hardest for an opening when Emily Murphy was strongest in the box and got on the end of a Gregory corner, but couldn’t direct her close-range header goal-bound.

However, despite some pressure, it was the visitors who went ahead through Devlin. Tammi George won a header in United’s half, which fell kindly to Sheffield United’s number 10, who took a touch towards goal before firing an effort over the head of Moan.

The Blades managed to keep their shape in the second half and frustrated Newcastle, who failed to register a shot on target after the restart.

With the game entering the latter stages, Emma Taylor’s speculative cross from the right missed everyone in the box as Moan watched it sail over her head and bounce behind off the crossbar.

A moment of brilliance from two substitutes was what got United back in the game with a great run in behind the right back before picking out McQuade, who arrived late in the box to finish first time into the bottom corner.

Despite trailing for the majority of the game, Newcastle came agonisingly close to snatching all three points when Molly Pike’s cross bounced and fell to an advanced Charlotte Wardlaw, who couldn’t keep down her half volley.
