Newcastle United are looking to strengthen their defence over the past few months. They have Brighton’s Dutch centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke in their radar. According to Football Insider, Pete O’Rourke said on the Inside Track podcast that Van Hecke is unlikely to leave Brighton in January.
He believes Brighton are tough negotiators, even though they often sell players successfully, and the club will reject any bid for a key player like Van Hecke at this point. Brighton rely on his performances this season, and Van Hecke seems content to stay put for the time being. This news disappoints Newcastle because strengthening their defence is a top priority. However, not getting a deal done in January also means that things could change in the summer window.
If Brighton do not let the 25-year-old go in January 2026, Newcastle United will suffer a huge blow, as the club plans to add immediate defensive strength. Playing in the Champions League can attract any player, and this could be an opportunity for Van Hecke, especially as he has shown reluctance to sign a new contract with Brighton.

However, Brighton always maintain a tough stance and high demands, which could force Newcastle to look for alternative options. Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace) may become an option again since his contract status makes him more accessible. Sporting Lisbon’s Ousmane Diomande, Benfica’s Antonio Silva and AC Milan’s Fikayo Tomori have also emerged as potential names in various reports.
Newcastle recently showed their intent to sign defenders from Europe by bringing in Malick Thiaw, but the club is also looking for relatively affordable options compared to previous expensive targets. Meanwhile, reports say Newcastle United plan to give their young full-back Tino Livramento a new contract.
This move reflects the club’s long-term plans. In addition, reports suggest Marc Casado is gaining attention for 2026, and Newcastle United need an additional option in midfield. These reports make it clear that the club is making a solid strategy to strengthen not only the defence but the entire squad. Newcastle fans will hope that even if Van Hecke does not arrive in January, things change in the summer.
