Newcastle United continue their defence of the Carabao Cup when Fulham visit in the quarter-finals tonight.
The Premier League teams go head-to-head at St James’ Park, with a place in the semi-finals at stake.
Eddie Howe is short of defensive options after Dan Burn joined a lengthy list of absentees at the weekend. Burn suffered a fractured rib and punctured lung during the derby defeat to Sunderland.
He joins Sven Botman (back) and Kieran Trippier (hamstring) in the treatment room, while goalkeeper Nick Pope and forward William Osula are also ruled out.
Howe could opt to hand Yoane Wissa his first start since arriving from Brentford in the summer. The forward has recently returned from injury and could offer an alternative, or partner, to Nick Woltemade.
Marco Silva’s squad will be heavily impacted by the Africa Cup of Nations. Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey and Samuel Chukwueze have all departed to link up with Nigeria for the tournament.
Elsewhere, Rodrigo Muniz remains out with a thigh problem, as does Ryan Sessegnon. Fulham will again look to Harry Wilson for creativity after the Welsh winger’s excellent run of form. Wilson has three goals and three assists in his last four Premier League appearances.
Eddie Howe will demand a response from Newcastle after a dreadful derby defeat at the weekend. Nick Woltemade’s own goal condemned the Magpies to a 1-0 loss at Sunderland, extending their woeful run in the Tyne-Wear Derby.
Newcastle sit 12th in the Premier League table after an inconsistent start to the season. However, their home form has been good. The Magpies have won seven and drawn one of their last eight games on home soil in all competitions.
Much has been the theme in the Premier League this season, Fulham have also struggled for consistent results. Their last eight league games have consisted of four wins and four defeats. Goals have not been an issue, however, with the Cottagers scoring in seven of those eight fixtures. However, just two clean sheets across that run indicates room for improvement defensively.
Newcastle predicted XI: Ramsdale; Livramento, Schar, Thiaw, Hall; Miley, Guimaraes, Joelinton; Murphy, Wissa, Barnes.
Fulham predicted XI: Leno; Tete, Andersen, Cuenca, Castagne; Berge, Lukic; Wilson, King, Kevin; Jimenez
