Neymar defended himself on Instagram on Sunday night after a gesture while leaving the pitch in Santos’s 3-2 defeat to Fluminense sparked controversy. The player said in a post that he had simply scratched his ear and that the criticism had gone too far.

He walked off at Vila Belmiro with his hands to both ears as the team were booed. Some supporters believed he was trying to block the boos.

Before his own statement, he responded angrily to a TNT Sports Instagram post. He then posted a video showing his route to the dressing room.

Santos are enduring another difficult spell, with mounting pressure from supporters amid poor results.

On Tuesday, Neymar argued with fans as he left the field after a 1-1 draw with the reserve side of Paraguayan club Recoleta in the Copa Sudamericana.

Two days later, members of an organised supporters’ group entered the CT Rei Pelé to confront the coaching staff, the squad and Neymar.
