Neymar has been diagnosed with a viral illness but remains in Santos’s travelling squad for Buenos Aires. The club said in a statement that the No 10 was medicated on Saturday night, responded well and continues to be monitored, a day after he was rested against Bahia.
He is due to link up with the group for Tuesday 28 April at 19:00, a Copa Sudamericana group match in Buenos Aires against San Lorenzo. He will travel alongside Gabriel Brazão, Igor Vinícius, Willian Arão and Gabriel Barbosa, none of whom featured at the weekend.
Players left out of the trip to Salvador trained at CT Rei Pelé on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Only Brazão, Igor Vinícius, Willian Arão and Gabriel Barbosa completed both days, with Neymar present only on Saturday.
After the senior group returned from Salvador following the 2-2 draw with Bahia, the quintet stayed at CT Rei Pelé for a technical session on Sunday morning before departure. Neymar did not take part in that session.
Santos arrive in Argentina under pressure, with one point from two matches and bottom of Group D. An away result is seen as vital to keep realistic hopes of reaching the next phase.
