Real Madrid are prioritising a centre-back this summer. Their initial focus had been Bayern Munich’s Dayot Upamecano, who signed a new deal in February, with Borussia Dortmund’s Nico Schlotterbeck the most heavily linked. Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, initially ruled out, now appears back on the agenda, being available on a free, with Castello Lukeba also linked.

“To be honest, I have to categorically deny it. Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point yet.”

He was speaking to Bild.

“Now Ole [Book, sporting director] will be my contact person, along with Lars [Ricken, Managing Director]. I’ve already spoken with him, but we haven’t reached the point where a renewal is imminent.”

Recent talk in Germany had suggested a new deal was close. The 26-year-old is contracted until 2027, and as he nears the final year, clubs have sensed an opportunity.

Word in Germany has been that he is keen on a move to Real Madrid this summer, and would give them priority should an offer arrive. Bayern Munich, another preference, are less likely to move for him after that renewal, and the question is whether Madrid will meet Dortmund’s price for a player beyond the age they usually spend big on.
