Nicolas Tagliafico could miss Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria on Tuesday night, 3am in France, after a calf problem in the build-up.
According to L'Équipe, the OL left-back, 33, suffered a left calf issue in the 2-0 warm-up win over Honduras on 7 June. Tests showed a minor lesion and his withdrawal has not yet been confirmed.
The current indication is that he will not feature in the first game. His participation in the tournament is not considered at risk for now, and Lionel Scaloni’s staff will monitor his progress.
The holders have already lost Leonardo Balerdi to a right calf injury, ruled out of the competition and replaced by Marcos Senesi (Tottenham).
A member of the 2022 title-winning run, Tagliafico had been in line to start this World Cup. Against Algeria, Facundo Medina, Lisandro Martinez or Valentin Barco could deputise.
