As reported by TuttoMercatoWeb’s Marco Conterio, Nicolò Fagioli will be on top of Milan’s wishlist for the summer, as long as Massimilliano Allegri remains at the club.
Fagioli has resurrected his reputation as one of the most reliable midfield operators in Italy during his short stint at Fiorentina, with the club’s sporting director Fabio Paratici going as far as calling him Barcelona-esque.
While La Viola now look likely to remain in Serie A after looking destined for the drop for a significant portion of the season, holding on to Fagioli in the summer may prove to be a tall order. The 25-year-old has been one of the shining lights at the Artemio Franchi, having made 41 appearances across all competitions this season.
Despite Milan’s recent downturn, Allegri has done a commendable job in his first season since returning to San Siro and has the Rossoneri on the cusp of Champions League football. However, his future at the club is not secure, especially given the FIGC’s imminent overhaul.
While Allegri has distanced himself from the Azzurri gig, Giovanni Malagò, who is in the mix for the Italian FA presidency, has the 58-year-old at the top of his list to take the Italy national team job.
If he is to remain at Milan, however, Allegri wants the centre-back, central midfielder, wingback, and centre-forward positions reinforced with experienced operators. His presence at the Rossoneri dugout would thus make his reunion with Fagioli highly likely, whose €16m valuation and €3.3m-per-year contract shouldn’t prove to be much of a hurdle.
Milan will not be the only suitors going for Fagioli in the summer, however, and can at least anticipate interest from Spain, with Atlético Madrid also monitoring the situation closely.
