Borussia Dortmund needed 120 minutes and penalties to beat Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday night and ahead of Friday’s Bundesliga clash against Augsburg, Niko Kovač hinted at squad rotation.
Following Stuttgart’s defeat against Fenerbahce, Sebastian Hoeness notably made 10 changes to his squad for their 2-1 win against Mainz on Sunday and although it’s likely to be less extreme, Kovač commented on the normality of high rotation with as many as seven fixtures in 22 days.
Speaking at Thursday’s press conference, Kovač said: “That’s normal. Stuttgart, for example, made 10 changes.
“You need that to maintain a high level. We have high quality players, and that’s part of football. We need physical and mental freshness, and I’m making use of that.
“I trust every single player.”
Serhou Guirassy was a substitute against Eintracht Frankfurt in midweek, but it’s likely that the Guinean forward will start despite his dry spell in front of goal.
Kovač did confirm that Süle is touch and go whether or not he will play on Friday night. “They came through the cup match well. The only one with problems is Süle. He has a swollen two. [Emre] Can and [Julien] Duranville are making progress.
“[Ramy] Bensebaini will return to the squad.”
