Enzo Maresca has admitted he doesn’t know if Enzo Fernandez will be available for Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Ajax.

Fernandez returned home early from international duty due to swelling on his knee and missed Chelsea’s 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

Josh Acheampong, Pedro Neto and Reece James were the goal scorers as the Blues recorded a comfortable victory despite a disappointing first half.

Enzo Maresca gives update on Enzo Fernandez

Fernandez has played a key role for the Blues this season, and the Forest game was the first game he’s actually missed.

In Fernandez’s absence Chelsea really struggled in the first half with Romeo Lavia and Malo Gusto in midfield, and had to introduce Moises Caicedo at the break.

The introduction of Caicedo made a huge difference, with Chelsea suddenly looking better, but Fernandez was also clearly a miss.

It’s unclear how long Fernandez will be out for, but worryingly Maresca revealed he didn’t know if he’ll be fit for the Ajax game.

“Enzo has a small problem but we are not able to say if he is available for Ajax,” he told his post match press conference.

Chelsea will be hoping Fernandez isn’t out for long as the games come thick and fast between now and the November international break.

Moises Caicedo Chelsea’s most important player?

Whilst Cole Palmer is a huge miss, it appears clear Caicedo is the player Chelsea can least afford to be without, and the midfield looked totally lost without him.

The Ecuadorian really is the glue which holds the team together, and is without doubt Chelsea’s most important player.

The Blues were able to give Caicedo a rest over the international break, whilst he only played 45 minutes against Forest, but Chelsea need to keep him wrapped in cotton wool, because any period without him is going to be a big problem.
