Nottingham Forest have reportedly maintained a long-standing interest in Jack Butland, with the Premier League side emerging as the most prominent suitors for the 33-year-old English goalkeeper. The shot-stopper is entering the final 12 months of his contract at Ibrox, which has intensified speculation around his future this summer. According to Rangers News, the Light Blues are actively seeking a new keeper ahead of the transfer window opening on 15 June, a move that could render Butland surplus to requirements at the club.

Rangers Face a Summer Goalkeeping Shake-Up at Ibrox

Danny Rohl has identified 20-year-old Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday as his primary goalkeeper target, with the Ibrox boss keen on a reunion with a player he handed a senior debut during his 18 months at Hillsborough. Charles is set to leave Sheffield Wednesday following their relegation to League One, though Manchester City have since entered the race to re-sign the Northern Ireland international as a replacement for James Trafford. Former Owls winger Chris Waddle has warned Rangers that landing Charles could cost them up to £10 million this summer, reflecting the level of competition for his signature.

Rangers Must Act Quickly Before They Lose Their Targets

Rangers‘ back-up goalkeeper Liam Kelly is understood to be close to agreeing a new contract at Ibrox, which suggests the club’s primary focus remains on replacing Butland rather than adding depth. Charles has appeared 34 times for Sheffield Wednesday already and in the 2025/26 season posted a save percentage of 70.5 per cent, ranking 11th among Championship goalkeepers, though his 4.35 saves per 90 minutes was bettered by only one other stopper in the division. The statistics prove that he was tested relentlessly behind a poor defence, yet one who consistently held his ground under pressure.

The Right Move for Rangers This Summer?

Letting Butland leave this summer is a decision that is logical, but it also has real risk. His form has dropped over the past 12 months, and with a rebuild underway at Ibrox, moving him on now rather than waiting until his contract expires next year makes sound financial sense for Rangers. The club avoid losing him for nothing and free up wages for areas that arguably need investment more urgently.

The Charles pursuit is where things get genuinely interesting. Rangers could offer him a clear route to regular senior football and European competition, something that appeals to a young goalkeeper still building his reputation at the highest level. Rohl knows exactly what Charles brings, and that personal connection matters more than most people acknowledge in football. A manager trusting a goalkeeper he already understands is worth more than any scouting report.

The threat from Manchester City, Celtic, Cardiff and QPR is real, and Rangers will need to make a move with intent once the window opens. If the club secure Charles and recieve a reasonable fee for Butland, this becomes one of the shrewder pieces of business Rangers could do all summer. The real danger is hesitating too long and losing both situations.
