Santiago Rodríguez is leaving New York City FC, and his move to Botafogo completely redefines the vision of the club. The sale is the second-largest in NYCFC history, only topped by Taty Castellanos' move to Lazio. The club generates a Designated Player slot and retains a percentage for resale in the future.

The numbers don't lie

Rodríguez had a direct impact on NYCFC's performance. In 2024, he had 16 goals, 6 assists, and 22 goal contributions, which were the club's best. He also had 89 key passes, 105 successful dribbles, and 185 ball recoveries. His contribution was both in attack and in possession situations. His presence in midfield allowed the team to gain more possession and create spaces to attack.

It would be a problem to lose Rodríguez. The team has lost other key players this transfer window already, such as Christian McFarlane (Manchester City), James Sands (FC St. Pauli), and Jovan Mijatović (OH Leuven). Losing their No. 10 and not having a replacement of similar quality might jeopardize the team's performance this season.

Was the transfer a good deal for NYCFC?

The club negotiated a high transfer fee and kept a portion of the player's rights, which in the future can generate profit. Additionally, the Designated Player role is free, leaving the possibility for the signing of a high-level reinforcement. However, so far, NYCFC has not shown a clear plan for who will take this role.

Rodríguez at Botafogo

Botafogo is buying a player who will be the game-changer. The Uruguayan arrives in Brazil after an impressive performance in MLS, where he won 287 duels and 60 tackles in the last season. His playing style may fit the Brazilian game, especially in a team that would like to add some creativity in the midfield.

The experience he gained at NYCFC could be a plus. Rodríguez played in international tournaments, finals, and was part of one of North America's most challenging leagues. At Botafogo, he will have the challenge of maintaining this level and being one of the team's key players.

What to expect from NYCFC after Rodríguez's departure?

The Uruguayan's exit does not necessarily mean a dip in performance, but the club has to act quickly to replace him. In his absence, the attacking department loses a player who directly scored 22 goals last season.

Management has some money to look for a new name in the market and still holds on to the available Designated Player slot. NYCFC is well-established and can potentially look for internal solutions, but replacing a player with such phenomenal statistics is not an easy thing to do.

If the management can strengthen the team and bring in a marquee player, the team can be competitive. Otherwise, Rodríguez's absence would be felt, and NYCFC would not be able to win games without a player of his quality.
