Austria Wien have signed 32-year-old Verena Hanshaw from Women’s Super League team West Ham. The Austrian legend had represented her country more than 130 times and is seen as a coup transfer for both the Bundesliga and Austria Wien.

The talented defender has enjoyed spells with Italian giants Roma, German outfit Eintracht Frankfurt and more recently West Ham. The 32-year-old is the Austria national team’s fifth most capped player and joint-eighth highest goal scorer of all time, despite being a defender. Hanshaw was named in the team of the tournament at the 2017 European Championships.

“I’m very happy to be returning to my homeland after 16 years,” Hanshaw said. “I’m looking forward getting to know all the girls, but also to seeing those I’ve known for a long time from the national team. I’ve watched a few games and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the fans. The atmosphere has always been fantastic, and that makes me even more excited to be able to play here in the [Franz Horr] stadium soon.”

Austria Wien manager Stefan Kenesei spoke about the importance of a player with a such a high reputation.

“We have secured a top-class transfer. She brings enormous international experience from various countries, including the English Women’s Super League and the Austrian national team, and has been one of the most consistent players at the highest level for years.

“Her move to Austria Wien is a strong signal for our sporting direction and the development of the club. Verena will immediately help us with her quality, experience, and mentality, and will also be an important leader on the pitch.”

What lies ahead for FK Austria Wien in 2026?

Austria Wien will kick off their Bundesliga title defence on 31st July. They will face their main rivals SKN St. Pölten at home in the Franz Horr arena. A huge fixture that is sure to draw crowds to open the season.

Their UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign will begin on 5th August at home again, this time against Croatian side Hajduk Split.
