Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim hints that Luke Shaw could soon be deployed in a new rule in his 3-4-2-1 formation.

Since his arrival at the club a year ago, the Portuguese manager has stuck to his guns, fielding the same playing system on every occasion. On the other hand, the 40-year-old has been open to changes in personnel.

For instance, we’ve seen club captain Bruno Fernandes playing as a No.10, as well as a central midfielder. The same goes for Amad Diallo, Noussair Mazraoui and Matheus Cunha, who have also been bouncing back and forth between various positions.

Ruben Amorim open to fielding Luke Shaw at left wing-back

The former Sporting CP manager has been waxing lyrical over the England international, whom he described as a ‘world-class’ player.

With Lisandro Martinez ruled out with an ACL injury, Shaw has been omnipresent in the left centre-back role.

However, the Argentine has now recovered from his long ordeal and could be set to earn his first call-up in almost 10 months when United host Everton this Monday.

Although the Southampton youth product should maintain his role for the time being, the situation will likely change when Martinez regains his optimal condition.

Nevertheless, Shaw is originally a left-back, so this could represent an opportunity for him to feature in a more advanced role.

“He can play left wing-back but of course, the load that a player does in that position is a little different if you are doing that on a daily basis,” said Amorim in his pre-match press conference on Friday (via the Manchester Evening News).

“He is more prepared to do that position, but of course, he can play there, he is a smart player, and he is fit in the moment, so I think he is an option.”

Shaw offers something different from Dorgu & Dalot

Since the start of the season, Patrick Dorgu and Diogo Dalot have been vying for the left wing-back role. While the young Dane represents the future, the versatile Portuguese has become one of Amorim’s favourite pupils at the club.

At this stage, neither one has set Old Trafford ablaze. Dalot has put on some disappointing showings this season, prompting calls from the supporters to drop him in recent weeks. Amorim obliged and brought Dorgu back to the starting lineup, but Shaw represents a more experienced and defensively sound option.

However, it remains to be seen if the 30-year-old still has the legs to trot up and down the left flank, especially after all the injuries he endured throughout his career.
