After Marc-Andre ter Stegen announced on social media that he would be undergoing surgery to address his back problem, FC Barcelona have issued a medical statement confirming the same.

However, one key difference between the two statements is that while the player mentioned a three-month recovery period, the Blaugrana have not specified any such timeline.

Instead, the La Liga champions mention that another statement will be sent out after their club captain completes the procedure.

“First-team player Marc ter Stegen will undergo further surgery next week to address his lower back problems,” Barcelona’s statement read.

“The procedure will once again be carried out by Dr Amelie Leglise under the supervision of the club’s Medical Services, at the Sports Clinic Bordeaux Merignac.”

“A new medical update will be issued after the procedure.”

Since Barcelona started pre-season training on July 9, Ter Stegen has been unable to participate in a single group training session due to the aforementioned back problem.

The 33-year-old had previously undergone surgery on a similar issue and will now be operated on once again.

If Ter Stegen is out for only three months as specified in his statement, Barcelona will be unable to use his absence to register a replacement, as La Liga rules stipulate that provision can only be utilised if a player is out for four months or more.
