In a devastating blow, FC Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has sustained a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot and is set to undergo surgery, the club have confirmed in an official statement.
“First-team player Fermín López suffered a fracture in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot during yesterday’s match. The player will undergo surgical treatment,” the statement read.
Fermin suffered the injury after receiving a blow to the foot during last night’s La Liga game against Real Betis at the Spotify Camp Nou.
Having felt discomfort, the 22-year-old attacking midfielder was taken off by Hansi Flick at halftime and tests conducted today have confirmed the worst possible news for the youngster.
Fermin has suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot and will need surgery to address the injury.
Building on that, journalist Fernando Polo of Mundo Deportivo reports that Fermin will not be participating at the 2026 FIFA World Cup with the Spanish national team.
The La Masia graduate had been named on the preliminary squad list and was expected to make the final 26-man roster that will fly to North America next month.
However, his foot fracture and subsequent surgery are likely to keep him out of action for close to two months, ruling out the possibility of him playing at the World Cup.
This will come as a bitter blow for Fermin, who had enjoyed an exceptional campaign for Barcelona and was looking forward to more international glory with Spain, having already won the Olympic Gold and the UEFA Euro 2024.
