1860 Munich have announced that former striker Kevin Volland will return to the club in the summer, leaving Union Berlin.

Volland left the Grünwalder stadion 13 years ago to move to Hoffenheim. The 32-year-old’s career has also seen him play for Bayer Leverkusen, Monaco and Union. Since moving to the Haupstadt in 2023, Volland has failed to establish himself, only scoring four goals across 34 appearances and two seasons.

For die Löwen, Volland made 60 appearances, scoring 20 and assisting 15. On returning to his boyhood club, the 32-year-old said:

“For me, returning to Grünwalder Straße brings things full circle,”  “I’m delighted to be able to repay that trust in me and to give it my all once again at my beloved club.”

Volland will drop down to the 3.Liga and will try to help 1860 gain promotion back to the second division. The club are currently seventh in the table and is seven points off the relegation play-off spot with four games to go.

It has been an eventful past week for 1860. First, it was announced that investor Hasan Ismaik is looking to sell his shares in the club. Then former head coach Werner Lorant, who sat in the dugout in the Munich suburb between 1992 and 2001 and led 1860 to the Champions League qualifiers, passed away.
