Rennes have signed Marseille midfielder Ismaël Koné (22) on loan with an option to buy, both clubs have announced. Koné’s option to make his switch permanent to Roazhon Park is reportedly valued at €14m. Koné became the first signing for Marseille as they looked to kickstart a new era under Roberto De Zerbi, but patience with the Canadian international has worn out. Koné only featured nine times under the tutelage of the Italian manager.
Koné will reunite with former Marseille teammate Lilian Brassier. The Brest centre-back’s Marseille loan has been terminated last week, paving the way for his return in his formative club. Rennes have been highly active during the transfer window as they look to bolster their squad. Les Rouge et Noir have been drawn into an unexpected relegation battle, although a first victory under head coach Habib Beye has lifted the team out of the relegation zone. Rennes now sit two points above the relegation playoff spot which is occupied by AS Saint-Étienne, their next opponents.
