Inter Milan head coach Cristian Chivu has decided to rest Nicolò Barella for today’s Serie A match against Hellas Verona, with Piotr Zielinski and Petar Sucic handed handed the start at the Stadio Marcantonio Bentegodi.

This afternoon’s Matchday 10 clash kicks off at 12:30 local time (11:30 GMT) in Verona, as Inter look to extend their good form in Serie A and consolidate their place at the summit of the table.

The Nerazzurri arrive in excellent form and have only a defeat to Napoli last weekend as a blemish on their recent record.

Meanwhile Verona are seeking a result to lift them clear of the relegation zone under Paolo Zanetti.

Chivu will be without Matteo Darmian, Raffaele Di Gennaro, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Thuram, though the French forward is close to returning from a muscle issue and could be back in midweek Champions League action.

All eyes will be on the centre of the pitch, where Barella is rested, despite signals that the Italian would start as regista prior to the game.

The Italy international was reportedly considered for maintaining Inter’s rhythm with Calhanoglu rested.

However, it is instead Barella who drops to the bench and Calhanoglu starts.

He’ll be flanked by Petar Sucic and Piotr Zielinski, both expected to offer forward runs and support for the attacking duo.

The move highlights Chivu’s faith in his midfield’s versatility.

Up front, Ange-Yoan Bonny retains his starting spot alongside Lautaro Martinez, with the Inter captain again leading the line and looking to end his brief scoring drought in Serie A.

Chivu keeps his structure largely intact elsewhere.

Yann Sommer starts in goal, shielded by a back three of Yann Bisseck, Manuel Akanji, and Alessandro Bastoni.

Out wide, Luis Henrique and Carlos Augusto provide the width and athleticism vital to Inter’s wing-back system.

Therefore, Dutch defender Denzel Dumfries has been rested.

The defensive line remains balanced with Bisseck continuing to grow in his hybrid central-right role, while Akanji and Bastoni anchor the defence.

Despite rotation in midfield, Inter’s tactical identity remains unchanged.
