Mainz have opted to award unexpected first team forward Fabio Moreno Fell with a professional deal. The 25-year-old was on the radar of absolutely no one prior to the season for very good reason. Moreno Fell only just joined his Bundesliga outfit from sixth tier side TSV Gau-Odernheim this past summer.

Moreno Fell – originally born in Spain – played academy football in the Pfalz before receiving a brief trial with the Ingolstadt reserves during the 2019/20 season. After that didn’t work out, Moreno Fell moved back to the Palatinate region to play fifth and sixth tier football with various clubs for most of his 20s. 

After some eye-catching performances for the Mainz reserves this year, Moreno Fell made a pair of previous Mainz head coach Bo Henriksen’s matchday squads before receiving a shock start under interim head coach Benjamin Hoffmann against Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 13. 

“Football sometimes writes some special stories,” Mainz technical director Meikel Schönweitz noted in a statement accompanying the signing. “It’s extraordinary to watch a player in the Verbandsliga in Gau-Odernheim in the spring and then see him playing in the Bundesliga at the end of the year,“

“Fabio has been demonstrating his qualities consistently since the start of the season and, as a down-to-earth guy, he is completely focused on his task,” Schönweitz continued. “We are very happy to see Fabio continue to wear the 05 jersey and to be able to accompany his development.”

“I can continue to develop here under optimal conditions and am very grateful for the trust and experience I have already gained with the professionals,” the player himself added. “This has allowed me to fulfill a dream. Now it’s up to me to stay on this path and continue to work hard.”
