According to L'Équipe, Lille president Olivier Létang is likely to receive a lengthy suspension on Wednesday evening from the LFP disciplinary commission after repeated attacks on refereeing, which would also sideline him from chairing the Ligue 1 college.
He was banned on 22 October for one match, with two more suspended, over outbursts following Lille’s 1-0 home defeat to Lyon on 28 September. Back then he denounced French officiating in scathing terms and warned of serious trouble if the situation continued.
On 23 October, during Lille’s 3-4 Europa League loss to PAOK, he confronted the referee at half-time with his phone in hand after a penalty was rejected. UEFA later fined him €10,000 for improper conduct.
Ten days ago against Rennes, a 0-2 defeat after Alexsandro’s early red card, the 53-year-old again railed at the officials and had to be restrained by sporting coordinator Sylvain Armand. The match delegate’s report said he demanded a half-time exchange with referee Éric Wattellier, then threatened not to restart. He relented when the officials returned to the pitch for the restart, which would have led to a Lille forfeit.
The suspended portion of his previous punishment is expected to be activated and added to any new sanction. In total he could face around two months out, and possibly a fine. During any ban he would be barred from representing Lille, accessing the bench or referees’ dressing room, sitting on the Ligue board, and presiding over the Ligue 1 college.
