Olympique de Marseille are reportedly in talks to sign Lille OSC midfielder Angel Gomes, even as he continues to be linked with a return to Manchester United.
United are expected to dip into the market for reinforcements in the middle of the park and Gomes’ name has repeatedly popped up. He departed Old Trafford for Lille on a free transfer in 2020 and has since established himself as one of the best midfielders in Ligue 1.
A right-footed player, Gomes is a versatile and possesses the ability to play in a deeper playmaker role as well as more advanced areas. He is technically gifted and works well under pressure.
At Lille, Gomes has primarily played as a part of a double pivot in a 4-2-3-1, a position in which he has had an outstanding record for retaining possession and controlling the tempo of the game.
In 2017, Gomes made his senior debut for United, coming on as a substitute for Wayne Rooney. In doing so, Gomes made history and became the youngest player to represent the Red Devils at 16 years and 263 days old.
A report covered by The Peoples Person in March relayed that United could re-sign Gomes this summer.
He has also been linked to West Ham but it was stated the England international is not too keen on joining the Hammers.
L’Equipe [via GOAL] now reveal that Marseille have opened talks to complete the free signing of Gomes ahead of other interested parties like United.
Gomes will part ways with Lille at the end of the season, having already made his final appearance for the club. With his contract set to expire at the end of the season and no intention of signing a new deal, Gomes has been excluded from the first-team setup.
The 24-year-old has not played since 1st March, and he is not expected to feature in the final two gameweeks of the Ligue 1 campaign.
It’s understood that Marseille have presented Gomes with a contract offer that could see him re-unite with Mason Greenwood at Stade Vélodrome.
Meanwhile, United are back in action on Thursday when they host Athletic Club at Old Trafford for the return leg of their Europa League semi-final tie. Ruben Amorim’s men retain a healthy 3-0 advantage gained from the first game.
